In Which Hannah and Suzanne Watch Buffy
So. I just did a simultaneous watch and chat with Suzanne... of Buffy, of course. I had forgotten how funny some of the dialogue is. Usually I think of Buffy and the DRAMA of the show. It is angst and 'oh my god the world is going to end before the end of the show.' But the bouncy blond and the quirky sidekicks do actually make for some funny situations. And we can't forget the snark. Never forget the snark. Snarkity snark snark snark. There has always been a self-conscious mockery to show. Throughout high school, the Scoobies lived on the outskirts... looking into the normal teenage world, wanting to be in the normal teenage world, but fighting the forces of darkness... a bit of a wake-up call. Though the individual characters may not clearly express this self-consciousness, it is apparent in the situations in which they are placed... and the way they react. Buffy's recurring clothes minidramas... her puns! Her puns are some of the best things on the show! As Xander remarks in the first episode of Season 3, "I feel like we took her punning for granted."
